+A 1920s box containing 4 "NON-INFLAMABLE" Combs
These sturdy - rather satisfying combs (each nearly 8" long..) are made of a composite material manufactured in the 1920s in response to competition from cheap, but inflammable, celluloid combs from Japan.
The wording on the box is brilliant "KERONYX" COMBS ARE NON-INFLAMABLE. ODOURLESS. BEAUTIFULLY FINISHED. CHEAP AND DURABLE. MADE IN WHITE, BLACK, AMBER, TORTOISESHELL AND VARIOUS COLOURS"
Then in the printing around the Aberdeen Angus heads it says
"AWARDED AT LONDON THE ONLY MEDAL FOR REAL AND IMITATION TORTOISESHELL LADIES COMBS AND AT VIENNA THE ONLY MEDAL FOR COMBS OF EVERY DESCRIPTION"
On the combs themselves are impressed
"NON-INFLAMABLE" "TWIN CUT BRITISH MAKE"
On the internet I found this on a website about the Keronyx Aberdeen Comb works
"1922 Listed Exhibitor - British Industries Fair.
Manufacturers of Horn and Keronyx non-inflammable Combs of every description, for all markets;
makers of "Keronyx", a non-inflammable substitute for Vulcanite, Celluloid, Xylonite, etc. (Stand No. K.11) "
